Ode for Leo is based on Steven FosterŽs Beautiful Dreamer. Using the melody as a framework, this tonal piece spotlights the wonderful agility of the solo cello throughout its extraordinary range. Compositional devices used include question and answer, fugal type dialogue and an ostinato by both the cello and solo instrument. The feeling evoked should be emotional, but not sentimental.
